Design and Looks
The Samsung Corby PRO takes on after its older sister, the Corby. But if you look at the sides of the handset, you will notice it has put on weight. That's because the PRO has now acquired a QWERTY keyboard. Apart from the slide-out QWERTY, the phone looks much like its older sibling- rounded, diminutive and downright cute. The front features a 2.8” TFT resistive touchscreen. Strangely, the older Corby had a capacitive one but this new display is just as sensitive. It also produces bright and sharp images thanks to its QVGA resolution and large colours palette. Below it are the three hardware keys that are a standard on any touchscreen phone.
The slide out QWERTY is compact like the rest of the phone but still manages to be finger friendly. The keyboard is coloured in a bright tone and could range from red to yellow depending on the colour scheme. The keys on the QWERTY are large and tactile and won't bother users with big fingers. There is also sufficient room around the borders to boost the QWERTY's ergonomics.
The PRO employs the same TouchWiz interface which mounts the animated Comic UI. While the older Corby was known to slow down time and again, we suspect the PRO has a stronger processor to handle the load. It has true multi-tasking capabilities. This does not come as a surprise as it is also intended for PIM and organization use. To bring home the bacon, the PRO also features Wi-Fi and 3G integration which would help the young executives with their carriers without sacrificing any of the fun. And fun it is! The phone comes with tight social networking integration to popular social networking sites.
One of the few hardware changes made to the phone is the new camera. This time, the mega-pixels have been upped from 2 to 3.15. Image quality is decent and the addition of a lot of imaging options is a definite plus. The addition of GPS means that the camera also comes with the geo-tagging option. Media playing options are decent and the good sound quality and large screen should prove to be quite an entertainer.
On the flip-side, the phone incorporates the same 960mAh Li-Ion battery seen on the older Corby. With the added features this means users will have to charge the phone ever more frequently. Apart from this, the ergonomic QWERTY, the advanced connectivity and better email, PIM and organizing features have boosted the goodwill of the Corby name. The price may seem a little high at the moment but then again, this is a niche phone with all the latest features you could squeeze into a handset.
