Design and Looks
The phone incorporates a solid extreme body with the anti-shock urethane material providing resistance from shock and dust. The connectors around the phone are well hidden and covered to give a maximum protection from various elements. The design is simple and at the same time gives a good grip with its rubberized finish.
The sides of the phone are painted in metallic red and have small dents that give it a rugged look. The left side of the phone has the volume control keys and the key for switching the built-in flashlight. On the right side is the port for connecting the charger/headset/data cable.
The LED is mounted on the top left part of the phone. The phone also comes with a large hole on the rear end which could be used to tie it up with a cord.
With regards to the phone's breathing ability, the phone can easily withstand 30 minutes in 1 meter of water which is a remarkable feature.
The phone comes with a 262K TFT LCD display that features a resolution of 128x160. The resolution on the phone is not great but then the display is not built to please. The display performance is poor and the viewing angles are minimal. The phone also lacks brightness when used outdoors in sunlight.
The keypad comprises of alphanumeric keys which are spacious but very stiff. Keying in huge texts would definitely affect the typing speed. The D-pad is nicely placed and easy to use but should have been a little bigger for comfortable operation.
Marine uses the standard Samsung UI, found on all non-screen touch phones. The phone comes with three themes which change accordingly. The screens are easy to use and navigate with their features and are fast.
Along with the usual applications, the phone comes bundled with built in java applications like Sudoku, Carrom, Cannonball. There is mobile prayer application included too
The Marine also includes a camera lens that's paired with a 1.3 megapixel CMOS sensor that's present on the rear just below the loud speaker. It does not include a flash or a self portrait feature. Beside the loud speaker is present a mic that is responsible for noise cancellation. The mic receives the background noise and cancels it so that both the caller and the receiver can hear clearly.
The MARINE B2100 also has a built-in FM radio which can be used with only the headset connected to it which acts as the antenna.
The phone is a GSM quad band and supports GPRS and EDGE Class 10. The handset comes with Bluetooth v2.1 and along with SMS it also supports MMS and e-mails.
The phone comes with a 1000 mAh Li-Ion battery. During normal usage the phone could last up to 2 full days.
The Samsung Marine B2100 is targetted at a niche audience but the phone appeals to every one of us in our daily lives who would require many of its sturdy and rugged features to protect us from the elements.
Whether you're an extreme outdoor enthusiast or not the phone is meant for all who would not like to worry about dropping their handset or paying for repairs if caught in the monsoon.
